Alternative Spring Break

A group of 32 EC students and 4 chaperones traveled to Toms River New Jersey on an alternative spring break trip to assist rescue efforts following Hurricane Sandy. The group’s efforts were focused on two key projects. First, students ...worked on an eco-reclamation project to help restore key parts of the shoreline that were eroded as a result of Hurricane Sandy. The project largely involved replanting grass, trees, and shrubbery that were washed away in the storm but are essential to the local environment. Second, students worked on houses that were damaged during the storm but still have not been properly repaired.  Elyria Catholic extends its heartfelt gratitude to the FCSLA (First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association) for their generous support of our Alternative Spring Break.  Visit the EC facebook page to view all of the photos from the week!

GIANT EAGLE SUPPORTS ELYRIA CATHOLIC

Giant Eagle is currently celebrating the 25th Anniversary of their Apples for the Students program.

This program allows participating schools to earn points that can be redeemed for educational tools and equipment.  Giant Eagle has made it easy for you to participate in the program and earn points for Elyria Catholic.  You can sign-up by going to gianteagle.com, then click on “Educational Support” under “Community Events”.  Once you have done that, click on Apples for the Students and follow the instructions.  Then, scan your Giant Eagle Advantage Card every time you shop for groceries or get gas.  Giant Eagle has donated over $21 million to participating schools since establishing this program.

In recent years, Elyria Catholic has earned enough points to order several microwaves for the students to use during their lunch period.  We have also gotten a desktop laminator, electric pencil sharpeners, as well as scales and small equipment for the science department.

Obviously, our choices for the merchandise depend on the number of points that Elyria Catholic earns during a school year.  So, if you shop at Giant Eagle, please help Elyria Catholic earn those points!!!

ELYRIA CATHOLIC TO PARTNER WITH LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT

Elyria Catholic High School has agreed to serve as a training site for all of the local K9 police units.  At least once per semester, a team of local K9 police units will do a sweep of the lockers and the parking lot, searching for narcotics.  We join a number of other Lorain County schools partnering with local law enforcement in this capacity.

Although we do not expect the K9 units to find anything, it is still a great opportunity for us to partner with local law enforcement and serves as a deterrent to any student who may be inclined to make a bad decision in this regard.  The search also provides us a great opportunity to review our lockdown procedures with local law enforcement and identify ways that we can better protect our students in the case of unplanned emergencies.
