      Past News From 2009-2010

Dustin Stefek becomes EC's newest Eagle Scout
Congratulations goes out to Dustin, who earned 25 merit badges, 12 required and 13 elective, for his Eagle Scout.  He served as Troop 133 Patrol Leader and Troop Historian, as well as completed a service project of designing and coordinating the planting of a sensory garden at Murray Ridge School.  Great Job Dustin!

Witness
Although it was a very close game throughout, the Elyria Catholic faculty came away victorious in the annual Student/Faculty basketball game.

A Banner Day at EC
The main hallway of the school has a fresh look with the addition of new banners that display our pillars.  These banners were upgraded from the old ones with a stronger more lasting material, as well as a clip art being added to each one.  Special thanks goes out to this year's cast of The Living Stations of the Cross, who donated these banners to our school community.

The 2010 Living Stations of the Cross cast:  Vincent Faraji, Courtney Lutke, Miles Foisy, Christian Foisy, Tyler Vanderhoof, Toni Chavez, Scott Lilly, Angelo Cataldo, Tyler Velasquez, Breanna Wisnor, Melanie St. Marie, Grace Dill, Michaela Foisy, Anthony Trifiletti, Meghan Joris, Chelsea Gentry, Ryan Ksenich, and Taylor Robinson.

Rising to "The Challenge"
Congratulations to junior Grace Dill, senior Spencer Roule, and the entire Challenge newspaper staff for receiving awards at the University of Toledo's 45 annual Media Day.  Media Day honors high school newspapers and their contributing writers and editors across Ohio for excellence in journalism.  Grace won an honorable mention for her sports feature "Hometown Olympian: Alumna Heads to Vancouver."  Spencer won honorable mentions for two sports articles: "Tradition Doesn't Graduate" and "Panthers Hopefull as Basketball Season Starts." In addition, "The Challenge" newspaper won honorable mention for its front page layout.

Broadcasting Live from Elyria Catholic
A live radio broadcast was all the rage in April when the student operated radio station from Balwin Wallace College setup shop in the hallway of Elyria Catholic, a first for both EC and Balwin Wallace.  DJ's interviewed students and staff at the school, as their first experience in a live on sight broadcast.  EC students were intrigued with the workings of a live radio station, and were given information and promotional items, as well as signed up for a raffle for tickets to a concert.

Pictured above:  Big Senate President, Melanie St. Marie and PR Officer Angelo Cataldo talk on air with DJ's Ryan Radke and Jasen Solkol.  The WBWC radio team consists of: Ben Kubuski (EC class of 07), Shanna Kynkor, Amy Popik, and Lydia Puccini

Elyria Catholic Students Deliver a Powerful Presentation

Once again this year, 18 EC students came together to form a cast and present "The Living Stations of the Cross" to 7 parishes and 3 schools around the diocese of Cleveland.  This production, now in its 13th year, is a dramatic and prayerful presentation of Our Lord's Passion and Death.  Not only did this group deliver a powerful message seen by over a thousand area Catholics, they also raised over $3,000.00 that came right back to Elyria Catholic to help pay for various projects, including $500.00 donated to the Scott Holland Scholarship Fund.

"Your performance was simply awesome. I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it very moving.  I hope that this production continues for many years to come."

"Our small group in the balcony was in tears as we watched these teenagers deliver such a powerful presentation.  I don't know if they understand how much they touched everyone who saw them perform."
