¦¦ SCIENCE ¦¦
Philosophy
The program in the sciences explores the truth and law of God as they are expressed in natural phenomena. The course contents and the resources of the community are adapted to meet the needs of the students of this area. The program also develops an awareness of responsibility and respect for all stages of human life and for the world that sustains it.

Typical Science Sequence
INTEGRATED SCIENCE
Code: #302B Credit: 1
Length: Year
In Integrated Sciences, the student will be engaged in mastering selected topics in earth, space, and physical sciences. A majority of ninth graders will take Integrated Science. Focus will be on preparation for the Ohio Graduation Test.
BIOLOGY
Code: #321 Credit: 1
Length: Year + Lab Prerequisite: Department Recommendation
Biology covers the following topics: Cell physiology which includes basic biochemistry, homeostasis, respiration, photosynthesis, protein synthesis, and cell reproduction; Genetics including Mendelian genetics and its application to human genetics; Microbiology including unicellular organisms, bacteria growth and reproduction. After studying Biology, students will learn the value of all forms of life, helping them become better caretakers of the Earth.
HONORS BIOLOGY
Code: #325 Credit: 1
Length: Year + Lab Prerequisite: Department Chair Placement
Honors Biology is designed for the above average freshman who would benefit from an accelerated science program. The same topics covered in BIOLOGY, cell physiology, genetics microbiology, and evolution are included. Significant laboratory time is used in the achievement of course objects.
CHEMISTRY *
Code: #331 Credit: 1
Length: Year + Lab Prerequisite: C in Algebra I and C in Biology and Department Recommendation
In Chemistry, the student will be actively engaged in learning the organized study of the structure and behavior of matter: atoms, molecules, and compounds. A significant amount of mathematics is involved. Laboratory work in the course involves careful observation and attention to detail.
* Students taking biology in the 9th grade are strongly recommended to select chemistry in the 10th grade.
PHYSICS
Code: #343 Credit: 1
Length: Year + Lab Prerequisite: C in Algebra II, C in Chemistry and Department Recommendation
In Physics, the student studies the fundamental natural laws as they pertain to the areas of mechanics, light, sound, electricity, and magnetism. Mathematics is very relevant to this course. Laboratory time is devoted to the performance of selected experiments.
APPLIED CHEMISTRY
Code: #339 Credit: 0.5
Length: Semester Prerequisite: Department Recommendation
Applied Chemistry is the study of the basic concepts of chemistry that apply to life. Concepts include: matter, energy, physical changes, and chemical changes. If a student takes Applied Chemistry, it is recommended that he/she should also take Applied Physics. Closed to students who have taken Chemistry 331.
APPLIED PHYSICS
Code: #349 Credit: 0.5
Length: Semester Prerequisite: Department Recommendation
Applied Physics is the study of force, motion, electricity, and magnetism that will allow students to explain these phenomena as they pertain to their lives. If a student takes Applied Physics, it is recommended that he/she should also take Applied Chemistry. Closed to students who have taken Physics 343.
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
Code: #360 Credit: 1
Length: Year Prerequisite: Department Recommendation
Environmental Science will allow the student to analyze the environment in which he/she lives. Major topics will include environmental inter-relationships, environmental interactions, types of pollution, and policy decisions that are made regarding the environment.
ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY
Code: #365 Credit: 1
Length: Year + Lab Prerequisite: B in Biology, C in Chemistry and Department Recommendation
Anatomy and Physiology builds on the knowledge acquired in biology and expands into human anatomy and physiology. This course is recommended for students who have a strong interest in biological or medical fields. Dissection is required.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT CHEMISTRY
Code: #333 Credit: 1
Length: Year + Lab Prerequisite: B in Chemistry I, C in Algebra I, Department Recommendation
AP Chemistry is a college level chemistry course. This honors course is intended for future science majors and pre-medical students. The course will emphasize and elaborate on topics covered in Chemistry I as well as introduce new topics such as equilibrium, kinetics, thermodynamics and electrochemistry. Laboratory work will be a significant part of the course. Upon completion, the student may elect to take the AP Chemistry exam.
