The Guidance Program is designed to help students develop the tools to create meaningful lives for themselves. Five objectives are:
  • Build community through communication and compassion.
  • Foster student awareness and identity.
  • Help students develop life skills.
  • Help students overcome obstacles to learning and achieving.
  • Support the mission of Elyria Catholic by focusing on issues in three domains: 1) Academic 2) College/Career 3) Personal-Social.
Guidance counselors are available throughout the school day to assist students with a variety of issues in the academic, personal-social and college-career domains. Examples of specific responsibilities include: assessing career goals, assisting with college admissions, teaching life skills such as communication and problem-solving, helping students sort through emotional problems and cope with loss/change, consultation with parents and teachers and referral to community resources. We conduct our services through classroom guidance, small group facilitation and individual counseling. It is our goal to meet with each one of our students to get to know him/her over our four years together, and we encourage students and parents to seek us out for assistance at any time. We welcome input from our parents! Several times during each semester we offer evening parent sessions on a variety of topics including the college application process and financial aid.

Guidance 9
Guidance sessions are presented to help the student adjust to high school life. Information is given about grades, courses, report cards, point averages, class rank, extracurricular activities and college admissions. The student also learns the decision making process, good study habits, and ways to maintain social-emotional health. Students begin to plan their academic program for the next three years and take the Explore Test, a preperation for the ACT College entrance exam.

Guidance 10
Each student is provided the opportunity to find out his/her career interests and to do some investigation into career areas, abilities, courses, and college academic programs. Students are given the PLAN Program/Test which prepares them for the ACT.

Guidance 11
In early fall, juniors are presented basic information about the PSAT which is given in October. Practice questions are covered so students will know what to expect on the test. In the second semester, juniors concentrate on future educational possibilities and begin looking into admission requirements, costs, programs and other aspects of schools he/she may consider attending. Information is given about financial aid, the college visit, ACT and SAT exams, and students are shown some techniques for taking college entrance tests and coping with test anxiety. An individual conference is scheduled for each student.

Guidance 12
During the first few weeks of the fall term, each senior is instructed in procedures for applying to colleges. This includes: (1) when and how to apply, (2) recommendations and transcripts, (3) college visitations, (4) talking to college representatives, (5) financial aid and scholarships, and (6) college entrance tests. Guidance Counselors meet with students individually as often as necessry to assist with personal questions and problems related to future plans.
